In every community, in every state, and right here in Columbus, Indiana there are an abundance of homeless animals. In the U.S. alone, there are an estimated 6-8 million homeless animals entering animal shelters every year. Barely half of these animals are adopted. Tragically, the rest are euthanized. These are healthy, sweet pets who would have made family additions. (Source: Human Society of the United States)

The importance of spaying and neutering pets cannot be overstated from both a community perspective, as well as the general health and well-being of each individual pet.

In Columbus, C.A.R.E. (Community Animal Rescue Effort), a Columbus-based not-for-profit organization, is dedicated to supporting and funding both the messaging of the importance of spaying/neutering pets, as well as low-cost spay/neuter clinics in our community. The proceeds from the annual "Spay-ghetti" dinner supports C.A.R.E.’s spay/neuter efforts in Columbus by going to C.A.R.E.s spay/neuter fund. Last year alone, C.A.R.E. was able to spay/neuter over 1,400 animals!

Remember! Proper Animal Care is VERY Important!

A healthy and happy pet is...

Spayed/Neutered,

 Up to Date with Shots,

On Heartguard or another Heartworm prevention ( See story below ),

and On Flea Meds.  (The vets are saying this winter was so mild that we still have fleas!)

Chi-Chi

Chi-Chi was taken in by CARE after his owner had passed away. At his initial vet visit he tested a strong positive for Heartworms.  Untreated this condition will kill a dog.  His treatment has begun at Franklin Animal Clinic and all is going. well  He will be in good shape in 2.5 - 3 months.  BUT it is hard on the dog to go thru this treatment and the treatment is extremely expensive. Any donations toward Chi-Chi's care are extremely appreciated as we work to get this little guy back to health.

Heartworms is a highly preventable condition with an inexpensive (only ~$6) monthly pill.  It is transmitted by an infected mosquito (lots of those in Indiana) and the worms grow and work their way thru the bloodstream and to the heart.  There they "gather" and will finally  damage the heart and can be fatal. Once infection occurs the treatment is extremely expensive and not always effective. Please keep your animals up to date on their shots and preventative medications!

Throughout the year, CARE often comes upon special cases . These are situations where an animal has had a particularly tough life, and is in need of special care. These are also cases where we often need a little extra help to make life a little better for these poor dogs and cats. Please check out their stories.
