SPAY/NEUTER STATISTICS

Last year, CARE arranged the transport of 627 animals (216 dogs, 411 cats) to Pets ALIVE spay/neuter clinic.  Since the clinic opened in March 2005, we have sent 1375 animals (556 dogs, 819 cats) to the clinic from Columbus.  Most of the animals sent are from private owners and with the trend of more cats going to each clinic than dogs, we hope this will help bring down the number of unwanted cats in our area.

CARE spent over $9,000.00 last year for Spay/Neuter assistance - - allowing us to offer the public very low spay/neuter costs, prompting those who would not otherwise be able to afford spay/neuter costs at a vet.  To date, we have used over $13,000.00 of assistance for our community, a majority of that cost being covered by grants.

We have also separated by age of intakes, you will notice a far fewer number of young puppies, but as you can tell a large number of cats we take in are litters of kittens — this shows that we are getting ahead in educating dog owners to spay/neuter their dogs, but are still dealing with extreme overpopulation of cats in our area.

EMERGENCY MEDICAL ASSISTANCE

Because we can rely on grant funds to help with spay/neuter assistance we are able to use donated funds to assist various emergency situations in a year.  We have helped & adopted out 5 heartworm positive dogs, a toy poodle who had to have a leg amputated, a blind cat, dogs with broken legs and dislocated hips.  In addition we are able to assist our local community by helping those whose animals needed emergency medical attention, but are not able to afford vet costs.  CARE is lucky to have a special working relationship with Franklin Animal Clinic who has donated many services and given us rescue discounts so that we are able to help even more people and their pets.

Since we began in April 2004 we have rescued over 1100 cats & dogs.

2007 EVENTS

In addition to our monthly adoption events at Petco, last year CARE participated in many local and regional events including: Literacy Festival, End of Summer Doggie Swim, Cummins Community Drives and Spring & Fall PetFests in Indianapolis.  In 2008 we will again be participating in all these events and are even doing our first Spayghetti Dinner to raise money for our Spay/Neuter & Emergency Medical Funds.

CURRENT & ONGOING PROGRAMS

CARE is currently funding NAHEE’s KIND News Adopt-A-Classroom program in all local elementary schools — we are in the 2nd & 4th grades but are looking to add more grades this next school year.  KIND News educates kids in being humane to animals and teaches the benefits of proper pet care.  We are also doing presentations in local classrooms.
