Pets Alive to fix all cats for $40 until Labor Day

Subsidized fee includes rabies vaccination

Bloomington, IN — Pets Alive nonprofit spay/neuter and vaccination clinic in Bloomington is now offering to perform spay/neuter surgery on any cat with an appointment scheduled before the Labor Day weekend for $40.  The fee includes a rabies shot for unvaccinated cats.

Pets Alive Executive Director James McNamara said he hoped the price promotion would encourage more people to fix their cats and those that are free-roaming.

“Shelters throughout south/central Indiana are overrun with cats and kittens right now,“ McNamara said. “It seems to be even worse than usual, and it was already really bad.”

Laurie Ringquist, director of Bloomington Animal Care and Control agreed that the situation is dire.  “We’ve got hundreds coming in every month and no where near that many forever homes to place them in,” said Ringquist.  “The inflow of cats into the shelter is just way too high.”

McNamara said there are lots of good medical and behavioral reasons to fix a pet, but that it was Pets Alive’s mission to keep homeless cats and dogs out of shelters.  “There are too many unwanted litters being born.  We’re out to minimize that.”

McNamara said that as always Pets Alive would count on its donors to subsidize the actual full costs of the spay/neuter surgeries.  “$40 doesn’t nearly cover all the expenses involved,” he said.  “But we must get them fixed and, fortunately, there are generous people who agree.”
